Menu: August 10 & 12, 2010

Sweet Corn---Seneca Arrowhead. Bi-Color. It’s prime time for this corn right now. That time comes and goes so fast. When it comes on, it’s ready. A few days later, it’s overripe. Now is the time. This week will be “it” for this batch We just had some. It was so good Steam or boil for just a couple of minutes. That’s all it needs.
Tomatoes---Red ones. We’re happy to have red ones since so many other people don’t. Not only are they red, they taste really good. Make a tomato/ arugula sandwich/ salad or a tomato salad or just eat one like an apple.
Arugula---Add some spice to your life! Try making an arugula pesto. It’s easy and nice for a change: Basically just make pesto but with arugula instead of basil. Wash and dry the arugula and add to a food processor with lots of garlic and some olive oil to the desired consistency. Add some pine nuts if you want. Blend in some Parmesan cheese and salt to taste. Serve with hot pasta and top with chopped tomatoes. Another idea: make a salad with arugula, tomatoes and a bit of vinaigrette
Cilantro---Try the recipe below for something different. Use a bit in a quesadilla. Add a bit to the arugula salad or pesto. Make a cilantro pesto, using cilantro instead of either arugula or basil and adding a chile for spice. Make a salsa with some tomatoes, onions garlic and a chile (if you have one).
Strawberries---Seascapes. These ever-bearing delights are doing well in spite of the weather. They fly out the Farm Stand this time of year. Enjoy “neat” or add some ice cream, yogurt, make a smoothie
Summer Squash---This is rather popular at the Farm Stand this season. It is so easy to steam or saute up. It makes a great taco or quesadilla addition with corn or flour tortillas, a bit of cheese, cilantro, tomato and either lettuce or (for spice) arugula: chop up and saute with some onion/ garlic until tender, then add to that quesadilla.
Bok Choy---Steam as a green. Saute with summer squash and onion. It’s baby so will cook quickly.
Green Beans---Steam up. That’s all I can say. That’s what we do. Add some of the steamed ones to a nice potato salad or even mashed potatoes. They make a great combo.
Potatoes---Red. They are a spring new potato and best used soon, within the next few weeks. The more storable ones will be coming up soon. These can be stored for a few months (in brown paper bag/ box in a cool, dry, dark place) but why store them when we’ll have more coming? Make a potato salad with some of the beans, boil, mash or roast with some garlic. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t have too many potatoes!

BOB'S FABULOUS YUMMY MARINADE

1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 oz.tamari soy sauce

1 1/2 tbsp. ground cumin

1 small jalapeno or other chile (optional)
fresh ginger (about an inch of it?), cut into six 1/4 inch slices

Combine and blend all ingredients together in a food processor or blender until the chile, garlic, ginger and cilantro are finely chopped.

I want to let you all know that Erica has left (for awhile at least) to go do archeology work in Lompoc. We thank her for all her hard work and for sticking with us during my illness We will miss her terribly but wish her all the best and hope she comes visit during this time.
We also want to welcome Dominique (I think I was remiss in doing so earlier) who has been working with the CSA boxes and at the Farm Stand for the past couple of months and Molly who will begin working on Wednesday at the Farm Stand. We are excited about this new team. Also, I (Evie) will be back on a regular basis for both the CSA and Farm Stand business.

Better watch out, though: the customers at the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market would take them all if we'd let them. You all get priority! Come check them out and see what a really fresh egg looks and tastes like.
