These Farmers are FOR a GE Free Sonoma County---Yes on M

Jack O'Lanturn Pumpkin---Hope you get one that you like. Get to know Jack and then carve a nice face on Halloween night.
Potatoes---Make some nice mashed potatoes. Make enough to stuff into a sweet pepper or two. Remember keep the dirt on until you use it and store in a dark, dry spot.
Sweet Peppers---Add some raw to salads. Try stuffing with mashed potatoes mixed with cheese: Roast for a bit first, until soft, take out the innards and stuff the potato mixture into the cavity. Bake until cheese is melted. Try the sandwich recipe. So many things to do with peppers!
Broccoli----I hear there's just a bit of this. Steam up or sauté and make a pasta dish.
Peas---Cascadia Snap. Ear raw or quick stir-fry. Throw a handful into a salad.
Tomatoes---Eat. Make a tomato sandwich. Add some to sautéed broccoli and peas.
Romano Beans ---We love these beans as you probably know by now. Try the recipe or steam up or saute until tender.
Lettuce---A necessity in any sandwich! Make a nice salad and throw in some peas and a bit of broccoli and of course, tomatoes.

Sweet Pepper Open Faced Sandwiches

2 to 4 sweet peppers

4 slices good quality bread
Mozzarella or provolone or cheese of choice slices
Olive oil

2 or more garlic cloves, chopped
Onions chopped, optional

Lettuce and tomato

Sauté up some garlic and onions if you use them in olive oil. Add sliced sweet peppers. Lower heat, cover and sauté until nice and sweated.
Meanwhile, slice bread and either put under broiler to toast or just toast in a hot oven. When toasted, add a bit of cheese and heat until melted. Slice tomato and wash lettuce.
To put it all together, put lots of peppers on top of the cheese and then lettuce and tomatoes. Eat.
This is a bit messy but really good.
NOTE: If you want you can roast some of the peppers in the oven and then sauté them with the garlic.

Joanna's Green Beans
From More Recipes from a Kitchen Garden by Renee Shepherd and Fran Raboff

1 Tbsp. butter

3 Tbsp. olive oil
1/2 medium onion, very finely chopped

2 red peppers, julienned
3 Tbsp. chicken broth or bouillon

1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 LB green beans, trimmed

Salt to taste
In a large skillet, melt butter, add 2 Tbsp. of the oil and heat gently. Add onion and red pepper and sauté slowly over medium low heat until peppers are tender-crisp and onion is translucent and tender. Remove half of this mixture and reserve. Add last tablespoon of the oil to the pepper and onion mixture remaining in the skillet. Continue to sauté over low heat for 4 to 5 more minutes until onions are very soft and beginning to caramelize. Add the chicken broth and lemon juice, put mixture into food processor or blender, and process until creamy. Steam green beans until tender and drain. Combine the beans, the reserved sautéed pepper and onion and the onion/pepper puree. Salt to taste. Heat and serve.

EGGS---Lee's chickens are starting to lay their eggs! Hooray. These beautiful and delicious eggs are available at the Farm Stand. Better watch out, though: the customers at the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market would take them all if we'd let them. You all get priority! Come check them out and see what a really fresh egg looks and tastes like.

GE FREE SONOMA COUNTY NEEDS YOUR HELP: Lawn signs will be available this week for those of you who would like to show your support for the initiative calling for a 10 year moratorium on genetically modified plants and animals which is on the November ballot. If you would like one you can give me a call at 837-8366. Thank you. We really need to get the word out about the importance to small family farmers that this moratorium pass. For more info you can go to gefreesonomacounty.org. Thank you so much.

Calling all loyal CSA members. We would love to put your recipes in the Menu. If you have anything that you'd like to share, please e-mail me at evie@tierravegetables.com and most likely your recipe (or comment) will make its way to this little Menu.
